Namibia is one of the most arid countries in sub-Saharan Africa. With rainfall patterns already highly variable and much of the population dependent on rain-fed agriculture and natural water sources, the country is acutely vulnerable to the effects of climate change. For organisations operating in Namibia — whether in mining, agriculture, tourism, or the public sector — understanding climate risk is no longer optional.
What the Science Says About Namibia
Climate projections for southern Africa consistently point to a warmer, drier future for much of Namibia. Key findings from regional climate assessments include:
- Mean temperatures are projected to rise by 1.5°C to 4°C by end of century, with the interior warming faster than the coast
- Rainfall is expected to become more erratic — with longer dry spells punctuated by more intense rainfall events

What Is a Greenhouse Gas Assessment?

A greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment — also called a carbon footprint assessment — systematically measures the volume of greenhouse gases an organisation emits across three scopes:

- Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity or heat
- Scope 3: All other indirect emissions in the value chain — from supplier operations to product end-of-life
A GHG assessment establishes a baseline from which reduction targets can be set, progress tracked, and climate commitments credibly reported to stakeholders.

Climate Adaptation: Preparing for What Is Already Coming
Mitigation — reducing emissions — is essential for the long term. But adaptation — adjusting to climate changes that are already locked in — is equally urgent. For Namibian organisations, adaptation planning might include:
- Diversifying water sources and investing in water-efficient technologies to reduce dependence on rainfall
- Redesigning supply chains to account for increased climate-related disruptions
- Updating infrastructure design standards to handle more extreme heat and more intense rainfall
- Incorporating climate risk into financial planning and investment decisions
Renewable Energy as a Climate and Business Strategy
Namibia has exceptional renewable energy potential — solar irradiance among the highest in the world, significant wind resources in coastal areas, and growing interest in green hydrogen. For organisations looking to reduce Scope 2 emissions and energy costs simultaneously, investment in on-site solar generation or procurement of renewable energy is increasingly the logical choice.
Beyond the environmental case, renewable energy reduces exposure to grid instability and rising electricity tariffs — a financial risk management argument that resonates regardless of climate conviction.
Reporting and Disclosure: The Growing Expectation
Globally, expectations around climate disclosure are rising rapidly. Investors, development finance institutions, international buyers, and government procurement processes are increasingly requiring organisations to demonstrate that they understand and manage their climate-related risks. For Namibian businesses with international partnerships or ambitions, this trend is already relevant.
